Robots with Hand-Eye Coordination
L5 Automation is taking robots out of highly-controlled factories and into complex real-world environments.
It’s created software that gives robots hand-eye coordination, enabling them to work where they have previously failed. Starting with strawberries, L5 has developed software for a drop-in harvesting robot to help farmers close labor gaps, increase productivity, and deliver fresher, healthier food.
L5 has received a grant from the National Science Foundation that will go towards improving its software application for these berry-picking robots. The company has built multiple prototypes and began testing on working farms in 2021.
Future applications for L5’s software include robots used in other agricultural capacities, as well as deep-sea mining and even lunar gathering and harvesting. Coincidentally, L5’s founder Alex Gutierrez co-founded Astrobotic Technologies, a space-robotics company that’s scheduled to land a rover on the moon in 2024.
