Blue Dot Motorworks can turn any car into a plug-in hybrid vehicle. And it can do it in one day and for less than $10,000.

This company has created a unique add-on called the Narwhal, which attaches to any car or truck and provides up to forty-five miles of electric range per charge. Simply put, it immediately transforms any vehicle into a hybrid one, capable of running on battery or gas power.

Founder Tom Gurski first developed the add-on for his own use. He wanted an affordable, environmentally-friendly way to “electrify” his driving while keeping the car he loved. He also believed that many others would feel the same way — they would be open to adopting electric-vehicle (EV) technology, but didn’t want to — or couldn’t afford to — buy a new car.

His initial creation was called the Humpback. It was a universal, bolt-on electric-drive system that leaves the car’s engine in place and can be installed in just one day.

After multiple prototypes, a production version of the Humpback was ready. It looked like a rear bumper that attaches to any vehicle, with support brackets that attach to the center of the rear hubcaps. This model would retail for around $6,000.

Eventually, it occurred to Gurski that most trucks, SUVs, and vans had a solid rear axle. So he created an additional product — this would come to be known as the Narwhal — that would attach easily to these types of vehicles.

As mentioned, these systems provide thirty to forty-five miles of all-electric range per charge. The traditional engine is available whenever needed. And drivers can shift between engine and electric power.

The system also uses the car’s engine and electric motor together to function as a generator, providing power for things like job sites, home backup, or camping.

In many respects, Blue Dot’s system is a form of retrofit, a term for a component that can be added to something and wasn’t originally included. Retrofits have been used in the automotive industry for decades. But many have been held back by high costs and installations that must be performed in-house.

Blue Dot solved these problems by creating a vehicle-agnostic system that can be installed by a mechanic in about a day, and retails for less than $10,000.

To generate revenue, Blue Dot uses the tire-rack model, wherein customers purchase the system from the company, and Blue Dot then refers them to a local installer. This could be a local mechanic or a national franchise.

Blue Dot is targeting vehicle fleets first. These are customers that often struggle with emissions requirements but don’t have the money to buy new EV pickup trucks or vans. After that, the company will expand into commercial fleets and then the consumer market.

A school district in British Columba is a prime example of Blue Dot’s potential customer. They are required to cut their emissions by forty percent by the end of the decade. But they don’t have the funds to buy new vehicles to replace their nearly sixty pickups and vans.

By using Blue Dot’s systems, they can cut their emissions by sixty-five percent and break even on their purchase in less than two years. Every year after that, they’ll save $100,000.

Blue Dot has been issued multiple patents in the U.S. The company is working on a third product, called the EscaPod, that will act as a range-extender for EVs.
